Former hair student – and now college apprentice – Rukshana Khanom

Rukshana Khanom - Academy hair apprentice

“I feel like a hairdresser not a student,” says 19-year-old Rukshana Khanom after moving from a full-time hairdressing course to an apprenticeship at the college’s Academy salon.

Rukshana, who studied for the Level 2 diploma in hairdressing at the Metro One campus last year, added: “On the full-time course I only spent two days working in the salon so I used to go in on my days off to gain more practical experience.

“Since I’ve started the apprenticeship I’ve gained so much more confidence and by working in the salon every day I’m picking up tips and techniques from other members of the team as well as getting to know the customers.

“I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone as it’s a great way of learning and gaining practical experience at the same time – and, of course, you get paid too!”
