Former hospitality student Jack Lewis

Imagine making chocolates every day! Well, that’s just what 22-year-old Jack Lewis does after the hospitality and catering courses he studied at the college gave him the confidence to launch his own business.

Jack, who joined the college straight from school, achieved the Level 2 diploma in hospitality in 2011 and the Level 3 diploma in professional cookery in 2012.

He said: “I’d always had a real passion for food and wanted to gain my qualifications and get hands-on experience in the industry so the college ticked all the right boxes.

“It was a far more relaxed way of learning than at school – I was there because I wanted to be there, not because I had to be – and as the tutors have many years of working in the industry themselves there was a huge resource of knowledge I could tap into.

“Not only did I learn the basics of the trade, but I also gained valuable hands-on experience of working in a kitchen and dealing with customers which gave me the confidence to launch my own business – Jack Lewis Chocolates – making delicious handmade chocolates, brownies and pastries. I currently supply to customers through my website and at craft fairs and farmers’ markets but hope eventually to have a shop where I can sell my goodies to even more people!

“College is a great alternative to following the traditional route of doing A Levels and going to university as it enables you to get a rounded education and gain work experience which is vital when looking for jobs in whatever industry you want to work in.”
