Former motor vehicle students Alex, Rob and Jonathan
After gaining his body repair qualifications at the college as a mature student Alex Fletcher opened his own classic car body restoration business – Body Beautiful (Cars) Ltd in Bridgnorth – aged just 29.
Alex, now aged 38, said: “I’d worked as a mechanic for a number of years but came to college to gain my body repair qualifications and then worked for a specialist restoration company for five years before opening my own business.”
And Alex has passed on his expertise to the next generation of specialists by teaching some motor vehicle classes at the Paget Road campus after gaining his qualifications, and now employing two of our former students – Rob Smith and Jonathan Groucher – in his workshop .
Alex added: “Rob was recommended to me by his tutor and worked for me on Saturday for a year to gain experience. I employed him and he has now been with me for five years. I took Jonathan on as an apprentice and he gained his qualifications at college whilst working alongside me in the workshop. He has been with me for two years and both are valuable members of the team.
“From an employer’s point of view I would suggest that anyone who wants to get into the industry does an apprenticeship as you learn in the workplace and are involved in ‘real life’ practical tasks and develop skills in performing to set quality standards and within time constraints from the start.”
