Doing his professional cookery and bakery qualifications at the college has led to sunnier climes for 37-year-old Craig Dodd – he now runs his own ice cream business in West Beach, Australia.

Craig, who called in to visit his former tutors on a recent trip back to the UK,  said: “After working in the motor vehicle industry for many years I wanted a complete change of career so my wife and I both decided to retrain. I did my Level 2 and Level 3 professional cookery qualifications and she did her food and beverage qualifications and, just a few years later, we’re working together running our own business.

“As a trained mechanic I renovated a vintage ice cream van and now make fresh ice cream, sorbets and desserts that I sell on the beach and at music festivals.

“Coming back to college was definitely a good decision – it gave me a good grounding and taught me the skills I needed to get started in the industry and the confidence to launch my own business.”
