Hairdressing apprentice Grant Vickers

Grant Vickers - hairdressing apprentice

Hairdressing runs in 17-year-old Grant Vickers’ family – his mum, aunt and cousin all work in the industry so it was a natural step for him to follow in their footsteps.

Having worked in salons on a part-time basis from the age of 13, he got taken on as a hairdressing apprentice by Cresswell’s in Compton as soon as he left school last year.

Grant, who has just started the second year of his Level 2 hairdressing qualification, said: “Once I left school I knew I didn’t want to go back to full-time studying so an apprenticeship was ideal for me.  I work in the salon four days-a-week and spend one day at college and it’s a great way to learn.

“My boss is really supportive of my placement and helps me to get clients so that I can complete my assessments and an assessor from the college comes to the salon to check on my progress.

“And I really enjoy the day I spend at college too as I meet up with other apprentices and get the chance to work with clients in the training salon – it’s a real working environment and I feel like a proper stylist when I’m in there!”

After completing the Level 2 course Grant hopes to move on to a barbering qualification.
