Hairdressing Apprentice Jodie Mason

Thirty-five year old Jodie Mason decided to pursue an apprenticeship instead of going to university, and by following her dream is now the proud owner of a successful salon.

Jodie, who owns Salon 27 in Penn, said: “I hated school and just didn’t want to be in a classroom. Every day my school bus would drive past a really flamboyant salon and I used to tell my friends that one day I would work there.

“I started an apprenticeship with the college as I wanted to do something hands on and learn a trade.

“I have two apprentices of my own now and have a very good rapport with the college as the staff there have always supported me.

“The assessor is amazing and if I ever have any problems or want to discuss something she is brilliant and it doesn’t matter how long or late she has to stay to get the work done.

“University was never an option for me as I disliked school, and I have achieved so much since my apprenticeship. I have gained my Master Colour Expert Award from Wella – and am now the owner of that former flamboyant salon I used to go past all those years ago!”
