HE student Kellie Arkell
After working as a hairdresser for 14 years, Kellie Arkell wanted a career change – so decided to put her knowledge to good use and become a hairdressing tutor.
Kellie, aged 30, works as a volunteer tutor at the college’s Metro One campus and is studying for the two-year part-time Certificate in Education / PGCE course so that she can work in a college as a qualified assessor or tutor.
Kelly said: “The course has really opened my eyes to working in an education environment and I have learnt so much – including planning and delivering lessons effectively, curriculum planning and reflecting on my personal practice – and definitely have more confidence as a teacher now.
“And because I’ve worked in the hairdressing industry I can put myself in the students’ shoes and reflect on how I felt when I was training – and I can also tell them that I’m still learning on this course too!”
“It was daunting going back to studying at first but as soon as I started the course I wanted to do more – I’ve improved so much and I’m really glad I chose to do it.”
