Health and Social Care student Ann Farrington
Former retail worker Ann Farrington enrolled on the Mental Health Awareness Course at college to help her realise her dream of working with prison offenders.
The 42-year-old, who has studied a number of short course at college – including Mentoring and Substance Abuse – to help her achieve her goal, said: “I am interested in getting into prisons to either do counselling or mentoring, and have recently started doing voluntary work in a prison, mentoring 18 to 25-year-olds.
“This course has helped improve my knowledge of issues surrounding people in prison – for example, nine out of ten people in prison have mental health issues.
“The tutor has been fantastic and really helpful. She sits and explains things really clearly.
“There are a lot of people out there lacking the confidence to change careers and come back to college but this course can give you that confidence. It has changed my life for the better. I’m learning so much and have achieved so much in the last year. Now I know what I really want to do.”
