Motor vehicle student Liam Oram

In just four years, 18-year-old Liam Oram has gone from having to leave school early to gaining a Level 3 qualification and being offered a job when he finishes college in the summer.

Liam, who started on an entry level diploma in vehicle technology progressed to the Level 1 diploma in vehicle technology and Level 2 diploma in vehicle body repair and is now studying for the Level 3 diploma in vehicle refinishing.

As part of the course he completed a two week work experience placement at a local specialist accident repair centre and, after impressing managers there with his interest and skills, was offered a full-time job as soon as he completes his course.

Liam said: “Since coming to college I’ve worked hard and learnt a lot.  The tutors have supported me every step of the way and are always there to advise me on the best way of doing things and the best routes to take.

“The work placement was a great experience – it felt good to be working in a real garage, I really bonded with the people there and was treated like a proper member of staff.

“When I was offered the job at the end of the placement I felt as though I’d really achieved something – from having to leave school at 15 I’d shown what I was capable of and it feels great to know I’ve got a job to go to as soon as I finish my course.

“If anyone is in the same position as I was a few years ago I’d say keep an open mind about college – it’s very different to school as it’s a more hands-on way of learning and the teachers treat you like adults and encourage you to be the best that you can be.

“I’ve achieved so much in such a short space of time and have shown that, even if you haven’t had the best start, if you keep your head down and work hard you can achieve whatever you want to do.”

When he starts work Liam will train with manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes and at the end of his training will be a very specialised MET (mechanical, electrical, trim) technician working on hybrid vehicles and prestige marques in the automotive industry.
