Motor Vehicle student McKay Thompson

Motor vehicle student McKay Thompson is celebrating after his fast reactions won him a pile of tools in a skills challenge at a national exhibition.

McKay worked against the clock to replicate a design made of plumbing pipes and fixings and claimed the prize after coming tops out of over 100 entries by completing the task in just 22 seconds.

His efforts won him a starter kit of Klein Tools – comprising screwdrivers, pliers, a wrench, spirit level and tape measure in a carry case – worth around £200.

McKay, aged 20, who is studying for a Level 2 diploma in motor vehicle service and repair, said: “I had to think quickly and logically to work out how I was going to complete the task in a timely manner, all skills that will be extremely important when I am working in the motor vehicle industry when I have completed my qualifications.

“I’m proud that I beat so many other people to win the challenge and am really pleased with the tool kit which will be very useful indeed.”

Having completed the Level 2 qualification McKay is planning to return to college in Spetember to progress to the Level 3 diploma in vehicle service and repair
