Pathways student Jessica Evans
After leaving school 19-year-old Jessica Evans worked for her dad’s tyre business for three years before deciding to pursue her interest in hairdressing.
To make sure it was the career for her Jessica enrolled on a Pathways to Hair & Beauty course which gave her the opportunity to learn practical skills and do some work experience in two local hair salons – and she so impressed the managers that they both offered her a job for one day a week!
Jessica said: “The course helped me to make a choice about whether I wanted to work in hair or beauty and I chose hair as that’s what I’m most interested in. As well as practical skills such as shampooing, conditioning and putting up hair I also learnt how to communicate with clients and staff in the salon and was able to put the skills I’d learnt into practice during my work experience.
“Work experience is an ideal opportunity to prove to an employer what you can do and how you can perform in a real working environment and I was over the moon when I was offered the jobs – it’s made me much more independent and I know I’m very lucky.
“If you’re unsure about what you want to do in the future take your time, find out what courses are out there to help you develop the skills you need, and try a pathways programme which will help you decide which is the best career for you.”
