Teaching & Learning student Ben Jurance
After working as a sports coach in primary schools for the past four years, 23-year-old Ben Jurance signed up for a Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification which will enable him to work as a Teaching Assistant in the future.
Ben said: “Doing the course is enabling me to harness the skills I’ve learnt as a sports coach and learn new things that I can take into schools, such as how to speak and relate to children and how to deliver sessions more effectively.
“As part of the course we get to do work experience in a school which is an opportunity to put what we’ve learnt at college into practice in the classroom and I definitely feel that my skills have improved since starting this course.
Ben added: “People might think that being a teaching assistant is more of a female job but I think children need more male role models these days so there’s definitely a gap in the market for more men to get qualified.”
