This 15 hour (3 hours over 5 weeks) qualification is suitable if you want to improve your understanding of Asperger's Syndrome, whether for professional or personal reasons. It will be particularly relevant for teaching assistants and learning support staff with little or no prior knowledge of Asperger's Syndrome. The qualification will help you develop in an existing role, such as a teaching assistant or learning support practitioner, or help you prepare to take on such a role.

  • The learner must be 16 or over to enter for this qualification.
  • Learners do not need any specific qualifications or prior levels of attainment to be eligible to take the qualification (apart from level 1 or equivalent in English and the ability to use ICT).

During the course you will study the following module : Awareness of Asperger's syndrome

  • Know the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome.
  • Know how Asperger's Syndrome can affect individuals.
  • Know about ways to support the learning of individuals with Asperger's Syndrome.
  • Know about sources of information for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and those supporting them

By studying this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Research key sources of information, advice and guidance
  • Different ways to support the learning of individuals with Asperger's Syndrome

Learners must achieve the single mandatory unit - totalling 3 credits via a completed portfolio

Learners may extend their knowledge of other learning difficulties or disabilities through further offers available throughout the academic year, or progress onto higher level qualifications to support a route into employment (such as the level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning certificate).

The college offers a range of short courses around S.E.N and supporting learning with delivery from experienced and dedicated staff working in the sector
