If you're passionate about beauty and want to work in the industry the City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma will teach you the practical and theoretical skills you need to become a qualified Level 1 beauty therapist. 

You will gain skills in a range of areas including skin care, make-up and health and safety as well as important customer service and communication skills which will set you kn the road to a successful career in the industry.  

To enhance your learning, you will also get chance to take part in enrichment weeks during which you will be able to learn new techniques, take part in competitions, and complete additional short courses in areas that would be useful to you in the industry, such as hair extensions, ear piercing or eyelash extensions.  

You will also complete 30 hours of work experience in a salon and attend lessons to improve your English and maths (or use the time for directed study if you already have good grades).     

Please note: you will be expected to arrange the work experience placement yourself and will also be required to purchase your own beauty kit, costing approximately £65, and college-approved uniform costing approximately £40 - order forms will be provided before the start of the course.   

To access this course you are required to: :

  • Have three or more GCSEs at grade 1 or above including English and/or maths
  • Undertake a salons skills session  in which you will be required to meet members of the teaching team and demonstrate filing and polishing nails or carry out a hand massage
  • Purchase a beauty kit and college-approved uniform (details will be provided when you enrol)


During this course you will study the following modules:

  • Basic make-up application
  • The art of photographic make-up
  • Nail art application
  • Skin care
  • Themed face painting
  • Providing basic pedicure treatments
  • Providing basic manicure treatments
  • Presenting a professional image in the salon
  • Creating a hair and beauty image
  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • GCSE English and maths

By studying this course you will:

  • Develop skills to be able to perform specific beauty-related services.
  • Gain knowledge in anatomy and physiology relevant to various services.
  • Develop customer care and communication skills to deal with enquiries, retail, consultation, complaints and all forms of client care.

Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Continuous assessment of practical tasks
  • Assignments
  • Paper-based tests to assess your knowledge and understanding
  • Production of a portfolio of evidence

  • Pursue a career in beauty therapy and related industries
