If you are committed to a career in the uniformed public services, but want a different way of studying, this course can open up a whole range of rewarding opportunities.   

This course is designed for students who enjoy practical learning and assessment and can demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a practical way, rather than completing more formal written assignments and sitting exams. 

The course combines scenario-based learning and simulated service situations, together with lectures and seminars taught by experienced academic staff and retired experienced police officers, and will equip you with learning, confidence and experience to enable you to progress to the next level of learning. 

You will learn about major incidents, international perspectives, human behaviour, diversity, criminology and your own personal effectiveness in emergency situations, as well as developing skills in teamwork, navigation and orienteering by taking part in a range of outdoor activities, and improving your physical fitness to bring you up to the level required by the public services. 

On successful completion of the course you could progress to the Uniformed Services NCFE Level 3 extended diploma or apply to the public service of your choice (subject to meeting their entry requirements). 

  • There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however you must be aged 16 years or above to enrol 

  • You may find it beneficial if you already have a Level 2 qualification (in any subject), however this is not a compulsory requirement and you can still apply for the course if you don't have this level of qualification 

During this course you will study the following modules:   

  • Prepare for a career in a chosen uniformed service 
  • Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services  
  • Develop leadership skills  
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion 
  • Values and standards 
  • Carry out map reading and navigation across open country  
  • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities 
  • Understanding discipline in the uniformed services 
  • UK legal systems and uniformed services 

By studying this course you will:  

  • Gain an understanding of a range of public services  
  • Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including essential employability skills   
  • Gain an opportunity to discover the levels of fitness required for each of the uniformed services and how to improve your health and fitness, ready for entry into these services 
  • Gain valuable leadership, team working and communication skills by taking part in a range of activities 
  • Develop skills in navigation and map-reading in an outdoor environment 

This a practical course and there are no formal examinations. Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways: 

  • Individual and group presentations 
  • Case studies 
  • Practical fitness testing 
  • Practical application of map and compass work 
  • Reflecting and feeding back to tutors on your performance 

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to: 

  • Progress to the Uniformed Services NCFE Level 3 extended diploma 
  •  Apply to join the armed forces or another public service subject to meeting their entry requirements

  • Take part in a range of outdoor activities  
  • Visit public service organisations as part of your course  
  • Improve your own health and fitness  
  • Learn from tutors with many years' experience of working in uniformed public services
