If you are working in a health and social care role and wish to progress up the career ladder into a supervisory or managerial position, this couse will enable you to develop the underpinning knowledge required for a senior role. 

The two-year course - studied over two days per week - tackles a wide range of issues in the health & social care sector and will enable you to become an effective health and social care practitioner. 

To access this course you are required to have:

  • 24 UCAS point OR
  • Access to Higher Education qualification OR
  • Level 3 qualification (including BTEC National Diploma, BTEC Extended Diploma, Diploma in Health and Social Care· CACHE Level 3 Diploma or NVQ Level 3)
  • An agreed work placement in a relevant health or social care setting or be willing to commit to a long-term voluntary placement.

In addition, you will have GCSE at grade C+/ 4 in an English-based subject or equivalent qualifications (e.g. Key Skills Level 2/ Learn Direct Level 2/ Functional Skills Level 2).

Exceptions may be made for mature students with relevant experience and alternate qualifications such as NVQs


During this course you will study a variety of different modules:

Level Four modules:

  • Multi-agency and safeguarding practices 
  • Young people's development 
  • Learning through practice 
  • Contextualising health and social care 
  • Understanding physical health issues 
  • Approaches to health promotion  

Level Five modules:

  • Challenging inequalities in H⪼ 
  • Emotional health and wellbeing 
  • Contemporary social policies 
  • Leadership and management in the workplace 
  • Planning care in context 
  • Introduction to research methods 

By studying this course you will:

  • Develop your understanding of how the health and social care sector works
  • Develop an appreciation for professional practice and recognition of the theoretical underpinnings of practice, including management and leadership
  • Examine the ideological, political, legal and administrative base of health and social care policy
  • Investigate influences on health in the community and the individual, including 'social problems' and health promotion
  • Examine emotional well being and social organisation, drawing upon medical, psychological and sociological explanations of emotional health
  • Investigate human structure and function to understand common measurements of physical aspects of health
  • Develop your confidence in reflective practice and the methodology required to analyse and learn from critical incidents
  • Improve your fundamental study skills

You will be continually assessed throughout the programme using a variety of methods including: traditional techniques such as essays, reports, and examinations.

The course provides a combination of work based skills, academic knowledge and professional development.

The programme is delivered in conjunction with the University of Wolverhampton and, on successful completion, can be followed by a one-year 'top up' course leading to an Honours Degree in Health Studies or Social Care/Social Policy.
