Introduction to Drone Surveying Level 3

Surveying with drones is an exciting new area of surveying. This short course introduces you to the rules and regulations currently in force and will give you a wider knowledge of the world of surveying.

This course runs for four days over two weeks.

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Four or more GCSEs at grade C or above OR
  • Be working within the industry and have several years of experience

During this course you will:

  • Understand how the principles of optics and electromagnetic waves are applied in surveying.
  • Understand the sources of systematic errors arising from the use of surveying equipment.
  • Learn about the use of laser technology in surveying.
  • Learn about Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology used in surveying.
  • Be able to use procedures for making survey measurements.

By studying this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of optics as they relate to survey instruments and measurements and describe the principles of electromagnetic waves as they relate to survey equipment.
  • Describe systematic errors in surveying measurements and explain the need for systematic calibration of surveying instruments.
  • Explain the different ways in which laser technology is used in surveying and describe different types of laser technology and their uses.
  • Explain how GPS technology is used in surveying and describe the benefits of using GPS technology in surveying.
  • Select the appropriate surveying procedures for three different surveys and use the selected procedures to perform surveys including drone surveys.

This is an assignment-based course so there are no exams. However, there will be practical elements that you will be directly observed on by your assessor who will give written feedback and an assessment decision.

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in Construction and Civil Engineering possibly in the field of Site Engineering.

You will be taught by tutors with specialist skills who will be available to support you in gaining new skills and understanding of this short course topic.
