If you want to study for a Level 3 Access to Higher Education course to enable you to progress to university, but you're not quite ready for this level of study, the one-year part-time Level 2 Pre-Access to Higher Education course will improve your skills and enable you to move on to the course the following year. 

The course is an excellent way of returning to education and will enable you to discover your potential in a supportive environment and help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need for the next stage of learning - whether that is the Access to HE course or another Level 3 qualification.   

It is also a valuable qualification in its own right demonstrating to potential employers that you have returned to education and have a range of transferable skills.     

The course is intensive and challenging and to succeed you will need to be committed, focused and have a zest for learning and good time management skills, especially if you work or have family responsibilities.  

Before you embark on the course it is important that you know what you want to study at university, have thoroughly researched your chosen course, have attended university open days and can demonstrate knowledge and insight into your chosen field.    

If you want to progress to higher education our Pre-Access to HE course will give you the skills you need to succeed.   

Also, if you earn less than £30,000 per year and aged 19 or over, you could study this course for FREE!

To access the course you are required to: 

  • Attend an interview at the college  
  • To have Level 1 qulifications is English and Maths

During the course you will study for the OCNWMR Level 2 Certificate Skills for Further Study in Health which covers: 

  • Biology 
  • Healthcare 
  • Psychology 
  • Social Policy
  • Sociology 
  • Study Skills 

In addition you will also study English and maths - once you have accepted an offer of a place on the Pre-Access to HE course it is important that you establish which English and maths qualifications you will need to enable you to progress to a higher education course in the future.  This will determine whether you study: 

  • GCSE English 
  • GCSE maths 
  • Functional Skills English / maths 

By studying this course you will: 

  • Gain the necessary entry requirements needed for the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma, another Level 3 vocational course or employment 
  • Develop your confidence in dealing with people from different social, racial and cultural backgrounds synonymous with your career choice.  
  • Improve your interpersonal skills 
  • Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in group activities, debates and oral presentations 

You will also improve your English, maths and science skills to enable you to:   

  • Answer questions clearly  
  • Communicate confidently in both spoken and written form 
  • Think clearly 
  • Appreciate the importance of attention to detail 
  • Acquire transferable skills that will enable you to understand and construct logical arguments. 
  • Develop your problem solving skills 
  • Develop your investigative skills knowing where and how to find information 
  • Develop your practical skills 

You will be assessed in the following ways: 

  • Portfolio of evidence to meet the requirements of the Level 2 qualification  
  • External examination for GCSE subjects  

Successful completion of this course will enable you to: 

  • Progress to the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma 
  • Enrol on a Level 3 course in a range of subjects. 
  • Apply for a job
