Working in health and social care can be extremely rewarding, by making a difference to people's lives every day.

Whether you want to work with adults, children or older people in a healthcare setting, residential centre, in the community or people's homes, we offer free training courses to will give you an overview of working in health and social care and teach you the skills and knowledge you need to apply for jobs in the sector.

We also work in conjunction with the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to help them recruit support staff and enable local people to get on to the career ladder. If you complete our 5 week course, you will have the opportunity to do a work experience placement in an area needing to recruit staff and, on successful completion of the course will have a guaranteed interview for relevant vacancies.

What will I learn? 

Course one:

  • Overview of the health and social care sector 
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities 
  • Understanding National Care Standards 
  • Privacy and dignity and promoting independence 
  • Person-centre approach to care 
  • Deprivation of liberty, safeguarding and risk assessment 
  • Emergency first aid, fire awareness and safe moving of people

Course two:

  • An introduction to the healthcare industry
  • Understanding different roles
  • Understanding National Care Standards 
  • Privacy and dignity and promoting independence 
  • Person-centre approach to care 
  • Deprivation of liberty, safeguarding and risk assessment 
  • Emergency first aid, fire awareness and safe moving of people 
  • Equality & diversity and safeguarding 
  • Health and safety
  • Behaviours in the workplace  
  • Customer service skills 
  • Answering telephone calls and taking messages 
  • Communication, teamwork and problem solving 
  • Digital and IT skills 
  • Producing a CV and applying for jobs 
  • Preparing for an interview (using AI and Bodyswap technology) 

How long is the course?

Course one is five days a week for two weeks

Course two is five days a week for up to five weeks and includes a work experience placement. 

To have a job interview you will be expected to attend all programmed training sessions and successfully complete the and successfully complete the course and work placement if applicable.

 

Where are the courses held? 

Courses are held at college sites or in local community venues.

 

This course is part of the college's Into Employment programme funded by West Midlands Combined Authority to equip local people with the skills needed to work in priority sectors across the region and support employers who are looking to recruit new staff.
