Healthcare Science T Level

Healthcare science is critical, not only for the delivery of current healthcare, but also to develop innovative tests and treatments for the future.

If you want a career in a healthcare science-related role, this new two year T Level qualification will give you the skills and knowledge needed for a range of occupations, such as a healthcare science assistant, radiography assistant or sterile services assistant.

 T Levels are an alternative to A-levels or an apprenticeship and are designed in conjunction with employers to give you the skills and knowledge they look for when recruiting staff. 

As part of the course you will complete a 45-day industry work experience placement in a laboratory, hospital or healthcare setting, giving you the chance to learn on-the-job, work alongside experienced employees and get a taste of what employment in the sector is like, as well as put the skills you learn in the classroom into practice in the workplace and use your expereinces in the workplace to inform your learning in lessons.

To access this course you are required to have five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including:

  • English at Grade 4
  • Maths at Grade 5
  • Science trilogy at Grades 55 OR
  • Separate sciences at Grade 4

During this course you will study:

  • Principals of good scientific and clinical practice
  • Standard operating procedures
  • Management of equipment and work areas
  • Importance of quality standards, health and safety

In addition, you will also have the opportunity to choose a specialism and gain a more indpeth knowledge of an area that interests you. 

 

By studying this course you will gain a range of skills to enable you to work in the health and science sector

  • Health, safety and environmental regulations
  • Managing information and data
  • Principles of good scientific and clinical practice
  • Core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology
  • Understanding of the healthcare science sector
  • Further knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, diseases and disorders, genomics and medical physics
  • Providing person-centred care
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Good scientific practice

This course will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Employer-based projects

 

Gaining a T Level quaification will enable you to progress to:

  • Employment in the healthcare sector
  • Higher education qualification
  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Higher apprenticeship 

 

You will carry out practical sessions in our well-equipped science labs and throughout the course will have the opportunity to go on science-related educational visits and field trips.
