If you've got an interest in pottery and are enthusiastic to learn then this is the right course for you - whether you're a complete beginner or are looking to refresh your skills. 

The course covers basic clay and 3D sculpture construction techniques such as slab, coil, thrown, slip casting and modelling, and surface treatments, including glaze, slip decoration, decals and transfer printing.

City of Wolverhampton College is an approved centre for UAL Awarding Body  Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media (Pottery).

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Level 2 in English
  • Level 1 in art and design or relevant knowledge/expereince in this area 

Applications from adults without the necessary qualifications but with relevant industry/work expereince will be considered on an individual basis. 

During this course you will study:

  • Exploring clay as a creative media
  • Exploring creative ideas and interpreting research
  • Creating a sample clay sculpture or functional vessel
  • Using metals and other resistant materials to create 3D sculpture

By studying this course you will:

  • Learn about modelling and coiling
  • Find out about slab building
  • Learn about various decoration techniques
  • Gain experience in glazing and hand building
  • Learn about pinching and the use of plaster moulds as pressmoulds

This is an assignment-based course so there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout the programme.

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Gain excellent experience and skills if you who are wishing to progress on to further study in the art and design subject area
  • Progress onto a full-time Level 2 Art and Design course

You'll train in our dedicated facilities which include dedicated 3D, graphics, fashion and print making studios together with a range of classrooms and facilities on campus including digital recording studios, TV studios and editing suites. All tutors are active within the art and design industry and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to call upon enabling you the best opportunity to progress in your chosen career.

Linking with local artists and companies and regularly hosting guest speakers, allows all learners to gain current and relevant training which gives them not just a qualification, but the experience in the career they wish to pursue.
