Barbering City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma Study Mode: Part-time    |    Course Level: 3

If you have already completed a Level 2 qualification in barbering or hairdressing this course will give you the skills you need to become a fully qualified barber.  

You will learn a range of advanced skills - including cutting men's hair and facial hair, providing shaving and facial massage services.   

You will also learn how to deliver first class customer service and promote products to clients, as well as the importance of health and safety in the workplace - all of which will impress future employers and equip you for a dynamic career in the industry.  

You will work with a range of real clients in the college's Academy hair salon at the Metro One campus in the city centre, which will enable you to gain valuable work experience as you learn your skills.  

As part of the course you will also meet with your personal tutor on a weekly basis to discuss your progress and any concerns you may have.  

*Please note: you will be required to purchase your own barbering kit, costing approximately £90 - order forms will be provided prior to starting the course.

It is also important to ensure you have potential clients who will be able to visit the Academy salon to enable you to complete your assessments.  

To access this course you are required to have: 

  • Four or more GCSEs at Grade D /3 or above including English and/or maths  
  • Level 2 barbering/hairdressing qualification 

You will also be required to attend an interview with a member of the college's admissions team, provide a current reference from previous college/ employment and complete a trade test with a hairdressing tutor to determine your suitability for the course.  

By studying this course you will learn how to: 

  • Cut men's hair to create a variety of looks. 
  • Cut facial hair to create a variety of looks. 
  • Provide shaving and face massage services.  
  • Provide consultations on hair services 
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Design and create patterns in hair
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon 

Throughout the course you will: 

  • Develop your skills as a barber by providing services to male clients at the Academy salon. 
  • Develop your confidence in dealing with a wide range of clients. 
  • Improve your communication and customer service skills. 
  • Gain valuable team working skills by working as a member of a team in a commercial salon. 
  • Develop your understanding of the health and safety in the industry 

You will be assessed throughout the course in the following ways: 

  • Providing services to clients in a realisting working environment 
  • Continuous formative and summative assessments for each unit for which you will be graded a pass, merit or distinction 
  • Online tests for each unit as you progress through the course. 
  • Provide a portfolio of evidence 

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Pursue a career as barber
  • Enrol for a Level 2 hairdressing qualification  

The Academy hair salon at the Metro One campus is open to the public and offers a wide range of hair treatments which will enable you to gain experience of working with clients as you learn your skills. 

To enhance your learning you will also benefit from attending presentations from visiting speakers who work in the industry.
