Barista Skills Level 2 Award Study Mode: Part-time    |    Course Level: 2

Do you want to work in one of the major growth areas in the hospitality industry? 

In the world of coffee culture, the beverage sector provides an increasing amount of employment opportunities in coffee bars, coffee houses, cafes, hotels and restaurants.  

The course will cover the full range of products and processes used in making beverages - from growing to serving - and you will also learn the importance of product care and presentation to produce a professional final drink.   

You will be taught your skills at the Metro One campus in the city centre which has its own on-site professional bakery and bakery shop selling fresh cakes, biscuits, pastry and bread to members of the public.  

You do not need any previous experience in the bakery industry - just an interest in cake decorating and a willingness to learn.  

During the course you will study the following modules: 

  • Product knowledge 
  • Cleaning and checking equipment 
  • Drink-building techniques 
  • Customer service 

By studying this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge in the following areas: 

  • Barista training 
  • Making espresso-based drinks to a commercial standard  
  • Producing other beverages - such as filter coffee, tea, chocolate, juice and smoothies 
  • Problem solving related to barista drinks production - eg poor crema on espresso, poor milk texture on cappuccino and cafe latte, inappropriate vessels and accompaniments, over boiled, incorrect production time etc  

This is an assignment-based course so there are no exams.  

You will be continually assessed throughout the course in the following ways: 

  • Observation of your practical skills 
  • Assignments  
  • Questions by tutors.   
  • Production of a portfolio (achievement folder) of what you have learnt.  

 

The skills you learn on this Level 1 course will enable you to progress to further hospitality and catering courses provided by the college:   

  • Level 2 diploma in professional bakery   
  • Level 2 diploma in professional cookery 

You will learn your skills in our induatry-standard catering facilties at the Metro One campus in the city centre and will be taught by dedicated tutors who have many years of industry experience and therefore know the skills that employers are looking for and how you can make yourself stand out when applying for jobs in the future. 

You will also have access to a range of support services provided by the college - such as careers advice and guidance, financial support and additional learning support, as well as the Students' Union which organises trips and activities throughout the year.
