If the answer is 'yes' the Certificate in Education/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education - run by the college in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton - is right for you!

The programme is a two year course designed for lecturers/trainers/teachers already working in the education sector and provides a benchmark of a professional accreditation for people intending to carry out teaching in a post-compulsory education setting (PCE).

The course has a mandatory teaching practice requirement which must be completed in a 'full' teaching role If you are not in paid employment, you will need to make your own arrangements for gaining suitable teaching practice in the post-compulsory education sector.

We have high success rates on this course and excellent feedback from our past students many of whom have gone on to take up posts as lecturers in sport, hairdressing, IT, horticulture, engineering and construction.

Whilst you are on the course there will be opportunities to enhance your learning by listening to guest speakers and visiting the University of Wolverhampton to participate in talks and activities offered through CRADLE - the Centre for Research and Development in Lifelong Education.

CRADLE offers curriculum development, continuing professional development (CPD) and consultancy services, as well as undertakes research of national significance for the lifelong learning sector - for more information go to the CRADLE page on the University of Wolverhampton website.

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Level 2 English and maths and/or a level 2 Literacy and Numeracy assessment
  • Level 3 qualification in the subject you are currently teaching
  • Teaching practice of 75 hours per year that consists of teaching a minimum group size of eight students who are studying accredited qualifications.
  • Commitment and support from a subject-specific mentor support

You will also be required to attend a pre-course interview and provide proof of qualifications.

By studying this course you will:

  • Develop your understanding of developing teaching and learning strategies
  • Learn how the post-compulsory education sector works and how the curriculum is planned for learners
  • Develop your confidence in planning interesting and engaging lessons
  • Understand how pedagogy is applied in the education sector
  • Develop, improve and reflect on your lesson planning skills

This is an assignment based course and so there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout each module - including written and practical assessments and lesson observations in both years by peers and subject mentors.

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Pursue a career in teaching in the post-compulsory education sector
  • Progress on to a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Masters in Education (MEd) programme
