Special Educational Needs Coordinators in Early Years Settings Level 3 Award

If you are interested in becoming a special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) in an early years setting, this is the qualification you are required to have.

As a SENCo, you will provide leadership and professional guidance to colleagues and work closely with staff, parents, carers, and other agencies to promote person-centred inclusive practice at which the interests and needs of pupils with SEN and/or disabilities are at the heart

Please note: SENCOs appointed after September 1, 2008 who had not previously been a SENCo for at least 12 months must achieve this qualification within three years of appointment.

To access this course you are required to:

  • Be working or aim to be working as a SENCo
  • Demonstrate you are working at a Level 2 in English
  • Be prepared to undertake an English diagnostic assessment if you do not hold an English Level 2 qualification

During the course you will gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • SEN codes of practice
  • Roles and responsibilities of the SENCo in an early years setting
  • Strategies and techniques for supporting children and their families

Throughout the course you will gain skills in:

● Communication

● Using ICT to research and complete assignments using a virtual learning platform

● Reflection, planning and prioritising

● Working within a team

This is an assessment-based course and there are no exams.

You will be continually assessed throughout the course in the following ways:

  • Assignments
  • Case studies
  • Oral and written questions
  • Projects

Successful completion of the course will enable you to work as a SENCo in an early years setting or progress to further qualifications in a range of areas, including:

  • Childhood studies
  • Community, youth and families
  • Early years Health and social care
  • Nursing
  • Primary teaching
  • Social work

The course is flexible and is delivered through a blended learning approach by experienced staff who have worked within the sector.
