Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC in Computing (RQF) Study Mode: Part-time, Full-time   |    Course Level: 4

Are you passionate about computing and computer technology?

Are you keen to learn more about database technologies, networking, programming, network security and software development?

If so, this course is the one for you!

You will have the opportunity to develop your practical skills and knowledge in the above areas and gaining the HNC qualification will enable you to pursue a career in computer systems maintenance, systems analysis and design, networking, network security, programming and database development or progress to university.  

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Completed a full Level 3 qualification in a computing-related area - this could be an A Level in Computing or a BTEC National Extended Diploma in ICT
  • Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C/4 or above

Consideration will also be given to:

  • Employees with a Level 3 modern apprenticeship
  • Applicants with an Access to Higher Education qualification
  • Mature applicants who work/have worked in IT and /or computing and are assessed as being able to study at this level.

By studying this course you will:

  • Learn how to develop algorithms and programmes for problem solving 

  • Learn the fundamentals of networking and how to put theory into practice 

  • Analyse an existing system and use this as a basis to design and implement a database 

  • Learn about security issues in relation to networks and the world wide web and develop security policies in a business context 

  • Develop knowledge of computer architecture looking at how computer systems function down to the binary level 

  • Manage a substantial computing project in a team project 

  • Develop your creative, practical and professional skills ready for the world of work 

  • Learn flexible and transferable specialised techniques and underpinning knowledge directly relevant to the IT and computing profession in which you are currently working or hope to work in the future  

  • Develop a range of interpersonal skills essential for success in your working life 

This is an assignment-based course so there are no exams.

You will be continually assessed throughout the programme and assessment methods used could include:

HNCs are designed to give you the practical and vocational skills of a particular field of work which can then lead straight to a career.

You can also use the qualifications to progress within your current career, for example as a stepping stone to gaining professional status.

Once you complete and pass your course you can progress on to university.

During the course you will have the chance to enhance your learning by hearing from guest speakers about thier experiences of working in the industry - past speakers have included representatives from IBM and Void Games.

You will also get the chance to visit the British Computer Museum at Bletchley Park and Alton Towers or Drayton Manor.
