Construction and the Built Environment Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma

This course provides an in depth knowledge of a range of technical and professional occupations in construction and the built environment. It is perfect for anyone who wishes to enter a particular specialist area of work, such as construction contracting technician, design technician, architectural technician, quantity surveying technician, estimating technician, site quality controller, building control, planning technician, and/or progress to higher education. This technical Level 3 qualification is equivalent to three A Levels.

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Four or more GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, maths and science OR
  • Successful completion of a full Level 2 study programme in a related area.

The course consists of mandatory and optional units. There are nine mandatory units, which cover the following aspects of construction:

  • Construction principles
  • Construction design
  • Tendering and estimating
  • Construction technology
  • Health and safety in construction
  • Surveying in construction
  • Graphical Detailing in Construction
  • Building Regulations and Control in Construction
  • Management of a Construction Project

The 6 additional optional units which will give you the chance to learn about a particular aspect of construction in more depth.

By studying this course you will develop employability skills:

  • Intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation

You will be continually assessed throughout the programme. There are several components to the assessment. Unit 1, 2 and 3 are externally assessed, including a written exam and supervised assessments. The remaining 12 units are assessed internally through assignments.  

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to pursue a career in the construction and built environment sector, and is ideal if you wish to enter a particular specialist area of work, such as:

  • Construction contracting technician
  • Design technician
  • Architectural technician
  • Quality controller
  • Site quality controller
  • Building control/planning technician
  • Quantity surveying technician

After you have successfully completed this course, you can progress on to higher education courses in construction.
