Is the lack of work experience holding back your job prospects? Then a Traineeship could be right for you! A Traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. At its core are work preparation training, English and maths, and a high quality work experience placement.

Do you have the qualifications required for an apprenticeship but need to improve your confidence or brush up on your employability skills?

On our short “Yes to the Job” programme you’ll learn how to develop skills to impress prospective employers and secure the apprenticeship in your chosen career field.

The course will cover presentation skills, CV writing, communication in the workplace, career planning and equality and diversity.

The course is four days per week (Monday-Thursday) for four weeks.

Gain a recognised qualification in Personal Development and Employability Skills. The course covers:

  • Personal development skills
  • Introduction to group and teamwork communication skills
  • Improving own learning and performance
  • Functional skills English

Students will also learn about British values, equality and diversity, financial planning and budgeting, business planning, CV writing and goal setting and much more…

LASER is a course aimed at young people aged 16-19. The course aims to develop personal and employability skills.

Successful students will achieve Level 1 Certificate in Employability and Personal Development Skills qualification. On successful completion, students can progress onto Level 2 qualification.

The course covers:

  • Personal career planning
  • CV writing
  • Developing personal confidence and self awareness
  • Presentation skills and much more…

LASER is a course aimed at young people ages 16-19. The course aims to develop personal and employability skills. Students will achieve Level 2 Certificate in Employability and Personal Development Skills qualification. On successful completion, students can apply for a traineeship, apprenticeship or college course.

For individuals wanting to develop personal skills for the job market as well as improve on employability skills and how to apply for jobs. Students will achieve an OCN Level 1 Award in Employability and Personal Development Skills.

The course covers:

  • Developing personal confidence and self awareness
  • Using teamwork skills
  • Manual handling
  • Risk assessment
  • Emergency first aid
  • Customer service

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to gain employment. The course will cover:

  • writing a strong personal profile to summarise your skills and personal qualities
  • producing a CV detailing your experience and strengths to employers
  • saving your CV in an appropriate format
  • identifying job search websites
  • setting up a personal email account, writing an email message
  • attaching your CV to an email
  • applying for a job and writing a covering letter to do with job application.

The Kickstart scheme is aimed at those aged 16-25 who are currently out of work and are in receipt of universal credit.

The programme aims to develop the skills and experience people need to find employment upon completion.

The scheme provides the following benefits:

  • 6 month paid job with a local employer
  • Gain experience of working in exciting companies in a range of industries
  • You will receive additional employability support to help boost your employment prospects in the future
  • Possibility of a permanent position within the company or progress to an apprenticeship

Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) can accelerate your return to employment. Delivered in conjunction with employers who are recruiting, programmes at the College will help prepare currently unemployed to apply for jobs in different areas of work.

You could be back into work in no time and, whilst you are retraining, you will not lose your benefits!

City of Wolverhampton College has designed courses to help meet immediate and future skills gaps to enable you to gain employment. SWAPs typically last up to 6 weeks and contain three main components to help you get back to work:

  1. Pre-employment training
  2. Work experience placements
  3. A guaranteed job interview or help with an employer’s recruitment process.

Sector Gateway courses aim to help people to update their key skills in preparation for employment in different sectors to help them move on to longer study programmes or employment in that field. 

We offer Sector Gateway courses in the following sectors: 

  • Adult Social Care 
  • Retail and Customer Service 
  • Warehousing 
  • Security 

Courses are available to anyone interested in the sectors above or looking for a career change and would benefit from an introductory level course.  

Courses include developing digital skills, applying for jobs and the opportunity to have guaranteed interviews with an employer.

The course is available to anyone in receipt of a means tested benefit, unemployed or economically inactive. 

Preparation for Work Programmes are available in the following sectors: 

  • Adult Social Care 
  • Cleaning 
  • Retail and Customer Service 
  • Warehousing 

Programmes are available to anyone interested in working in these sectors with English as a second language or looking for a career change and will benefit from an introductory level course to gain knowledge of the industry. 

Programmes include developing digital skills and applying for jobs. 

The course is available to anyone in receipt of a means tested benefit, unemployed or economically inactive.
