Joe Jones, former caprentry apprentice wearing a blue sweatshirt and a yellow high-vis waistcoat

14 years after first coming to college as part of his carpentry apprenticeship, Joe Jones has returned – as project manager for the company that has been contracted to refurbish and equip the new hairdressing and beauty salons at the Wellington Road campus.

Joe, now aged 31, said: “I started my apprenticeship in 2008, attending college one day a week for two years to gain my Level 1 and Level 2 carpentry qualifications, and then studied part-time – two nights per week – to gain my Level 3 qualification.

“Doing an apprenticeship enabled me to learn in the real world and prepared me for working in the industry, and having sound knowledge and theory to refer back to enables me to deal with problems as they arise.

“Working in the industry isn’t always easy, but if you keep your head down and work hard, you’ll get out what you put in and be able to work your way up to where you want to be.

“I used to have my own carpentry business, but unfortunately had to close it during the covid pandemic, and I am now working for SH Projects – a commercial interiors fitout company – project managing the conversion of the new spa at the Wellington Road campus and it’s nice to be back working where I first started out!”
