Abby, age 27, enrolled on the Steps into Work course in Healthcare at City of Wolverhampton College. After taking some time off due to personal circumstances, she decided to change her career path and pursue a role that would allow her to help others. Abby has now secured a position as a Support Worker with Progress Care, where she will be working with young people aged 19 to 29, providing care and support in their independent homes.
Abby said: “I’m really excited to start my new role with Progress Care as a Support Worker. After going through some difficult times in my life, I wanted to find a career where I could make a real difference in people’s lives. The course at City of Wolverhampton College gave me the confidence I needed to apply for the role, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the support I received from the tutors and staff.
“During my time at the college, I learned so many important skills—from employability skills like applying for jobs and preparing for interviews, to understanding health and safety, data protection, and the mental health act. I also had the chance to practice first aid and learn about handling medications, which are all key parts of my new role.
“At first, I was nervous about going back to education, but the staff were incredibly welcoming and supportive. My course tutor, Chris, really helped me feel more at ease and gave me guidance that I needed to succeed. The interview process for Progress Care was nerve-wracking, but I felt well-prepared thanks to the help I received at the college.
“I would say to anyone thinking about joining City of Wolverhampton College, go for it! You’re never too old to start something new, and the opportunities you gain from being at the college can truly change your life. I never thought I’d be in this position today, but with the right support and determination, anything is possible.”
