Doughnuts galore will be on the menu at City of Wolverhampton next week when bakery students take part in a national fundraising effort.

The students, who are studying for diplomas in professional bakery, will be turning out hundreds of the dough-lightful treats during National Doughnut Week (10-18 May) in aid of The Children’s Trust – the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.

Around 45 trainee bakers will be producing a range of jam-filled and ring doughnuts which will be decorated with sugar, icing, chocolate and multi-coloured sprinkles.

Leading bakery supplies company Craigmillar has supported the students’ fundraising efforts by donating bags of doughnut mixture which the students will prepare to industry standards before weighing, moulding and deep frying the sweet dough.

The doughnuts costing £1 each, will be sold throughout the week in the college’s bakery shop at the Wellington Road campus, with 50p from every sale donated to the charity.

Paul Garbett, bakery tutor at the college, said: “Everyone loves a doughnut and we are expecting them to be extremely popular, so this is a great opportunity for students to gain experience of producing large amounts of produce to meet customer demand throughout the week.”

Members of the public wishing to purchase doughnuts can call in to the Wellington Road campus from Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May, 10am-3pm.

National Doughnut Week was launched in 1992 and has raised a total of £1,147,546. The annual event has supported The Children’s Trust since 2005 and, to date, has donated £632,639 to the charity.
