“Eighteen months ago, I was low, lonely and panicked if anyone asked me anything”, said 27-year-old Hirie Dafku who comes from Albania.

“All I could say in English was “Hello” or ‘How are you?” and when you can’t talk to people around you it’s hard – I even struggled to buy food as I didn’t know what to ask for.

“I didn’t think I’d ever be able to speak English but, thanks to the to the ESOL course I can now explain what I want and understand what people are saying to me.

“The tutor motivated me every day and, now that I can speak to people, I can do anything I want to!”

Hirie, who moved the UK five years ago, has now applied to do a beauty course at the college’s Metro One campus.
