Former students and staff at City of Wolverhampton College’s Paget Road campus are being asked to share their memories of studying at the site before it closes down later this year.
The college’s new state-of-the-art £61million campus – in the City Learning Quarter in the centre of Wolverhampton – is due to open this autumn and all courses currently delivered at the Paget Road site, in Compton, will move to the new premises.
The campus, which opened in 1962, was originally the site of Wulfrun College before it merged with the former Bilston College to become Wolverhampton College in 1999, adapting its current title following the granting of city status in 2000.
Staff are keen to gather stories and photographs from former students and employees about their experiences of studying and working at the Paget Road campus, the friends they made, the qualifications they gained and the careers they progressed to.
Information received will form part of a historical archive which will be on display at the new campus and also feature at a celebration event to mark the end of an era of the much-loved site and recognise the contribution it has made to education in the city for over six decades.
Dr Adam Dwight, tutor in educational studies, who is leading the heritage project, said: ” The Paget Road campus has been a well-known landmark in the area since the 1960s and, in this time, has educated thousands of people from across the West Midlands and beyond.
“At college events we often hear parents or grandparents saying that they studied at the campus and we are keen to capture those memories, celebrate achievements and capture its history as we get ready to move to the new City Learning Quarter site.”
Anyone with tales to tell is welcome to attend a meeting of the heritage group at the campus on Monday, 31 March at 4pm. To book a place at the meeting or to email memories contact dwighta@wolvcoll.ac.uk
The new campus forms part of City of Wolverhampton Council’s City Learning Quarter masterplan which is transforming learning facilities for people across the city and saw the opening of a new £8.1 million Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston, in September 2024.
