When we first spoke to automotive student Tom Coates back in the summer, he’d just been offered a job as a smart repairer at leading motor vehicle dealer Greenhous before he’d even finished his Level 3 diploma in automotive paint refinishing!

Having started his job in July, we caught up with Tom to ask him how he’s getting on.

This is what he had to say:

“When we were at college Greenhous came in to look at what we were doing and then organised a visit to their site in Telford. Whilst there they talked about the job opportunities they had available and offered us all jobs for when we’d completed our course.

“It’s brilliant coming into the industry straight from college – I’m only 18 and I thought I’d have to start at the bottom and work my way up to the position I’m in now, so to go straight into the role feels really good!

“If you want to work in the automotive industry, doing a course at college is definitely worth it – you learn how to do tasks the correct way, learn how to use different equipment and get experience of working on vehicles and develop all the skills you’ll need when you do get a job.

“And there’ll always be something at the end of it, whether that’s a job or an apprenticeship – it was worth it for me and I’m sure it’ll be worth it for others too!”
