17-year-old Callum Wilkes came to college after completing his GCSEs and enrolled on a Level 2 construction multi-skills course and, after proving his ability, progressed to the Level 3 diploma in construction and the built environment.

As part of the course, Callum had the chance to do a work experience placement with Interclass Ltd – the company that has the contract to build the new £1.93m extension to the college’s construction centre at the Wellington Road camp

Callum, who wants to be an architect in the future, said: “I’ve been shadowing the site manager to see what he does on a day-to-day basis and have found out about the programmes and systems he uses in his job.

“I will be able to put this experience on my CV and, if I go into a site manager role in the future, I will be able to use what I’ve learnt this week – I’d definitely recommend work experience!”

Callum, who wants to become an architect and own his own practice in the future, added: “If you’d told me a few years ago that I’s be where I am now, I would never have believed it – it feels good!

“Anything is possible, it just requires a lot of work and you need to put the effort in to get where you want to be.”
