After working as a healthcare assistant for many years, 32-year-old Jovelyn Dallow wanted a change of direction and is now well on the way to a career in the catering industry after signing up for the Level 2 diploma in professional cookery.

After completing the Level 2 diploma in professional bakery last year, she is now gaining experience of working in a professional kitchen by cooking for paying customers in the college’s Academy restaurant.

Jovelyn said: “I’m really enjoying working in a fast-paced environment and feel proud when I see customers enjoying food that I’ve prepared – it makes me feel like a real chef!

“I’ve got a part-time job in a nursing home and the kitchen staff know I’m doing a cookery qualification so have already started to ask my opinion on how they should do certain things, or how they can do things better – it makes me feel great that they are asking for my advice.

“I was a bit worried about coming back to college as I’m older than the other students but I’ve fitted in well, the tutors are great and I’m learning lots – it was definitely the right decision for me!”
