The Bespoke Hair Company
Independent hairdressing salon providing all aspects of hairdressing in Great Malvern, Worcestershire
Why did you decide to take on an apprentice?
I originally chose to take an apprentice on to grow the salon team.
I am very passionate about apprenticeships as I feel it is a very engaging way to learn skills as hairdressers as it gives young people the opportunity to learn on–the-job and gain both salon and personal experience.
What duties does the apprentice carry out?
Our apprentices are a key part of the team, providing support to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the salon.
Main duties are assisting the team in salon and ensuring our guests are comfortable during their visit – a key part is greeting guests, providing refreshments and helping to maintain the salon appearance.
They also assist stylists with colouring and hair styling, shampooing guest’s hair and applying hair treatments and head massages.
How has the company benefitted from having an apprentice?
I have used the college for many years and had a lot of success with their apprenticeship scheme.
Since having my first apprentice just over eight years ago, I’ve had several apprentices that have all stayed and progressed in the company, enabling it to grow.
What I have found to be the great benefit of developing a team through an apprenticeship is they are ‘home grown’ and support the ethos and systems of the salon.
What support do you receive from the college when setting up the apprenticeship and what support is provided to you and your apprentice during their training
The college team is very supportive, including finding the perfect apprentice to suit our salon, at the start of their journey and ongoing throughout their training, as well as with paperwork for me or the practical side of learning for the apprentice.
We have a positive collaboration with the college and tutors who give regular feedback, guidance and support to make the learners’ training easy and beneficial.
