Dean Jones

Course: Computing HNC

Dean Jones studied a Computer Programming course at City of Wolverhampton College in 2002–2003, followed by HNC Computing from 2003–2005, a decision that completely changed his career path. He now works in partnership with the college, offering T-Level work placements and apprenticeships.

“I chose these courses because I was working in retail and wanted a career change into IT. At first, I thought programming would be my future, but after completing the HNC, I discovered a passion for IT support, which led me to my first role as an IT Technician.”

“Since leaving college, I’ve progressed from IT Technician to Network Manager, then IT Manager, and now Head of IT for the Central Learning Partnership Trust, overseeing IT across 16 schools. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve enjoyed seeing technology transform education.”

“My role involves managing IT operations, leading support and web development teams, planning large-scale projects, overseeing budgets and procurement, and ensuring cyber security. It’s challenging but rewarding.”

“The HNC gave me the foundation to start my career and now allows me to give young people the same opportunity through T Level placements and apprenticeships. I still return to the college every year to share my experiences with students.”

“In the future, I plan to stay with the Trust and continue driving IT forward to create safe, innovative digital environments for staff and students.”

“The HNC is a brilliant starting point because it covers a bit of everything, so whichever IT path you choose, it will help. The college offers great courses and passionate staff who support you every step of the way.”
