A group of learners from City of Wolverhampton College successfully completed the Into Employment: First Steps into Cleaning course, designed to help learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to secure employment within the cleaning industry. Delivered as part of a Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP), the course provides learners with industry training, interview preparation and the opportunity for guaranteed interviews with employers, including the college’s cleaning contractor and local cleaning companies.
Throughout the programme, learners developed practical knowledge in areas including COSHH, safeguarding, manual handling and first aid, while also improving their communication, teamwork and interview skills. The students said the following:
“The course gave me the knowledge and confidence I need to work towards starting my own cleaning business. I also found that it improved my public speaking skills and helped me build on my existing experience. I chose the college because of its good vibe and young energy, and I feel it has given me a better start.” (Wendy Morant)
“The course made it easier to find a job because of the interview preparation and links with employers. I also enjoyed working as part of a team and meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. I liked everything about the course.” (Narinder Kaur)
“I really enjoyed the course. It gave me the opportunity to meet new people, learn new things and build my confidence. The interview practice, communication activities and support from visiting employers helped me feel more prepared for work.” (Petra Rozmósova)
“The course helped improve my cleaning knowledge and taught me things I didn’t know before. The tutor took time to explain everything clearly, and the staff made sure everyone understood what they were learning. I also developed better communication skills and learned how to interact with others.” (Agartha Bakare)
The group formed strong friendships throughout the programme and supported each other every step of the way, creating a positive and welcoming learning environment. They worked incredibly hard, supported one another and approached every session with enthusiasm. We wish them success in whichever career path they choose.
