Get on the road to a great career in the automotive industry with the Level 1 Automotive Award in Transport Maintenance.
This short course will develop your skills and knowledge in a range of areas and give you a foundation in automotive knowledge, on which will enable you to progress to a higher level qualification or an apprenticeship in the subject area.
You will learn skills in light vehicle service and repair and use your abilities in a realistic working environment in our industry-standard workshop.

You will train at the new purpose-built £8.1 million purpose-built Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston, which boasts a 12-bay automotive workshop, a drive-in electric vehicle lab containing simulated training boards, a four-wheel laser alignment machine, and ADAS and Bosch diagnostic equipment.

Entry Requirements:
To access this course you will be required to:
- Attend an interview at the college
- Demonstrate that you have a good understanding of verbal and written English*
- Show a passion and interest in the automotive industry and an ability to learn
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of health and safety in the workshop
- You will also be expected to commit to good attendance and punctuality and demonstrate a commitment and good attitude to learning and achieving the previous qualification.
*Applications from adults without the necessary qualifications but with relevant industry experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Please note – you will need to provide your own steel toe cap boots and overalls to protect your clothes – these are essential items of personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary to keep you safe and to comply with health and safety regulations in the workshop.
What will I learn?
During the course you will study four modules in total:
- Health and Safety in the Work Place Tools, Equipment and Consumable Materials for Vehicle Maintenance
- Vehicle Engine Lubrication Systems Vehicle Braking Systems
What skills will I gain?
By studying this course you will:
- Understand the importance of health and safety
- Learn about maintenance and the use of tools and equipment
- Gain an understanding of the principles and procedures for carrying out basic vehicle checks and repairs
- Find out how engines and components operate
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be assessed through observation of practical tasks, written assessments, assignments, research and online tests.
What can I do next?
Successful completion of the course will enable you to:
- Progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Inspection
- Pursue an apprenticeship in the automotive industry
