Is this course right for me?
If you’re interested in nails and want an exciting career in the beauty industry this course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to provide nail enhancement treatments to clients.
This qualification which will teach you all aspects of manicure – including the structure of the nail, fling, shaping and cuticle treatment to prepare the nails for a manicure, how to apply nail varnish and carry out a French manicure – as well as how to apply nourishing treatments and perform a hand and lower arm massage. You will also gain additional skills in customer service, client communication, health and safety in the salon, and the promotion of products and services, all of which are transferable across the beauty sector and will be invaluable whichever area of the industry you decide to work in.
Please note: You will be required to bring clients into the salon to enable you to complete your assessments

This course will run on a Thursday evening: 5.30pm – 8.30pm
Costs
- Kit: you will be required to purchase your own nail kit (approximately £150)*
- Uniform : a college-approved uniform is compulsory (approximately £50)*
*Financial support may be available to cover some of these costs
Course details
Entry Requirements:
To access this course you are required to:
- Have three or more GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and maths
- Beauty/salon experience (preferred but not essential)
- Health & safety qualification (including Unit 202) or working towards &/or industry experience (voluntary or paid employment)
- Demonstrate good communication skills, show friendliness, respect and professionalism, and be able to work effectively as part of a team
- Undertake an interview with a member of the beauty team and a carry out a practical test
- You must bring a school report/reference that includes attendance and punctuality.
What will I learn?

- Aftercare & homecare procedures for the nails and skin of the hands
- The application of colour to the nails on the hands
- French manicure technique
- Single layer varnishing
- Multi-layer varnishing
- Paraffin wax and hand mask treatments for nourishment
- The study of the structure of the nail
- Contra-indications to manicure
- Client consultation techniques
- Provide and maintain nail enhancements
- Demonstrate client care and communication skills
- Promote products and services to clients in a salon
- Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

You will be assessed throughout the course in the following ways:
- Observation of practical work with clients and continuous assessment of practical tasks
- Multiple-choice online tests to assess your knowledge and understanding
- Production of a portfolio of evidence
What can I do next?
The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:
- Progress to a Level 2 qualification in beauty therapy or NVQ Level 3 in Nail Services
