Is this course right for me?

This practical, hands-on qualification is the perfect introduction to the construction industry. You’ll develop valuable skills across brickwork, carpentry, and painting and decorating, while gaining experience using industry-standard tools and equipment. Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to carry out a variety of essential construction tasks, from laying bricks and measuring materials accurately to marking and cutting basic woodwork joints, preparing surfaces, and painting walls to a professional standard.

You’ll also explore the different trades that make up the construction industry, understand how they work together on site, and develop your knowledge of health and safety practices. Whether you’re considering a future career in construction or simply want to build practical skills and confidence, this course provides a strong foundation to help you take your first step.

Entry Requirements:

For external applicants:
To access this course, you are required to:

  • Have three or more GCSEs at grade 1 or above including maths and English*
  • Attend an interview with a member of the college’s admissions team
  • Complete a short online assessment to determine your current skills and knowledge
  • Demonstrate how you have previously had good attendance and punctuality and a good attitude to learning
  • You will be expected to show commitment and determination to achieve the qualification.

*Adults without the necessary qualifications but with relevant work/life experience will be considered on an individual basis.

For internal progression learners (already studying with us):
Learners must be able to demonstrate that they:

  • Have successfully completed a relevant course that naturally progresses onto this programme, achieving a good standard
  • Have improved their English and maths grades since enrolment
  • Have maintained good attendance and punctuality
  • Show a consistently positive attitude to learning

What will I learn?

During this course you can study the following modules:

  • Introducing brickwork skills
  • Introducing site carpentry skills
  • Introducing paint finishing skills

What skills will I gain?

During this course you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the role of different trades in the construction industry
  • Develop basic skills in brickwork, site carpentry, painting and decorating
  • Learn about different tools used for different tasks
  • Develop your knowledge of health and safety and safe working practices

How will I be assessed?

This is an assessment-based course and two multiple choice exams.

You will be continually assessed by tutors throughout the programme to ensure that you are understanding the taught elements and whether you require extra help in a particular area.

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Progress onto Level 1 course in painting and decorating, carpentry and joinery, and bricklaying
  • Gain an apprenticeship in the construction industry
