Apprentices must be employed in a suitable salon before they start the qualification

What will I learn?

• Industry professionalism, codes of practice, ethics, appearance standards and time management.
• How to communicate effectively, greet clients and deliver good customer care.
• Legal and safe working practices including hygiene, sterilisation, PPE and risk reduction.
• How to carry out client consultations, tests, and assess hair, skin and scalp conditions.
• How shampoos, conditioners and treatments affect the hair and scalp.
• Principles behind barbering cutting techniques, sectioning, shapes and weight distribution.
• Methods for styling and finishing men’s hair using tools, products and equipment.
• How to cut, shape and outline facial hair safely and accurately.
• Knowledge of shaving services including blades, lathering, skin function and disorders.

How will I be assessed?

Once all on-programme assessments are complete, along with English and maths functional skills, apprentices will be able to go through the gateway and prepare for the end point assessment – this is a three-hour practical assessment along with oral questions assessed by an independent assessor.
