Is this course right for me?
Careers in the public services can be incredibly rewarding and this course will give you the skills and level of physical fitness you need to enter public service organisations.
You will learn about the role and work of a range of public services and how they each contribute to public and community safety; as well as gain an understanding of the meaning and relevance of citizenship and diversity.
You will learn important skills that are vital for working in a public service role – including communication, planning and team working, as well as improving your fitness and taking part in outward-bound expeditions. You will also complete 30 hours of a work experience placement.
We have excellent links with local and national uniformed service organisations and, as part of your course, you will get the chance to take part in a range of training and residential activities, which in the past has included:
- A one-day Armed Forces Challenge
- Large incident training with the Police, Fire and Ambulance services
- Exercise Eagle Learner – a work experience program with army personnel from 4 MERCIAN
Costs:
• Compulsory study visits: £120 per year*
• Uniform: A college branded uniform is compulsory and will cost around £123 per person*

Course details
Entry Requirements:
To access this course you are required to have:
- Four or more GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English and maths
- Successfully completed the Public Services Level 1 Extended Certificate or another Level 1 study programme (preferred but not essential)
What will I learn?
During this course, you will study a selection of mandatory and optional units including:
- The role and work of the public services
- Working skills in the public service sector
- Citizenship, society and the public services
- Crime and its effects on society and individuals
- Land navigation by map and compass
- Multi-day expedition experience
- Security procedures in the public services
What skills will I gain?
By studying this course, you will:
- Gain an understanding of the role and work of the public service sectors
- Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in team-building activities and educational visits
- Develop skills in navigation and map-reading
- Gain the opportunity to volunteer in and support the local community
- Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes to support a successful working life
- Discover, develop and maintain the levels of fitness required for each of the uniformed services

What can I do next?
The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:
- Progress to the Protective Services BTEC Level 3 national extended diploma in protective services (MAFA or Police Pathway)*
*Supports progression to the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)
