Is this course right for me?

If you’re passionate about hair and beauty but unsure which area to focus on, the Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty will give you an overview of the industry and introduce you to a variety of practical skills, helping you decide which specialism you’d like to pursue in the future.

On this course, you’ll learn essential techniques such as skincare, manicure and pedicure, and hair styling and colouring. It’s also a great stepping stone if you’d like to progress to a Level 2 qualification in Hair, Beauty, or Nails & Beauty, and take the next step towards a career in the industry.

Enrichment

To enhance your learning, you will get the chance to take part in enrichment weeks during which you will be able to learn new techniques, take part in competitions, and complete additional short courses in areas that would be useful to you in the industry, such as hair extensions, ear piercing or eyelash extensions.

Work Experience

Learners on this course will not complete external work experience, however, you will gain valuable hands-on practice by attending our commercial salon on a rota basis, working with paying clients to further develop your skills.

Costs

  • Kit: you will be required to purchase your own beauty and hairdressing kit (approximately £250)*
  • Uniform : a college-approved uniform is compulsory (approximately £40)*

Entry Requirements:

To access this course you are required to:

  • Grade 1 or above GCSE English and/or maths*
  • Beauty/Salon experience (preferred but not essential)
  • Current school report/reference
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, show friendliness, respect and professionalism, and be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • You will undertake a salon skills session in which you will be required to meet members of the teaching team and demonstrate filing and polishing nails, carry out a hand massage and twist and plait hair.

*If you are just below a grade 1 in English and maths, but we feel you are suitable for the course, you will be required to attend lessons in these subjects alongside your Beauty qualification – this is a mandatory part of the course. If you already hold a grade 4/C or above in English and maths, you will not need to attend maths and English lessons. However, you will be expected to complete directed study work packs during this time to ensure you meet the required study hours – this is also mandatory.

  • Presenting a professional Image in a salon
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women’s hair
  • Plaiting and twisting hair
  • Colour hair using temporary colour
  • Create an image using colour
  • Basic facial treatments
  • Basic nail art application
  • Basic manicure treatment
  • Basic pedicure treatment
  • Salon reception duties

What skills will I gain?

By studying this course you will:

  • Develop skills to be able to perform specific hair and beauty-related services.
  • Gain knowledge in anatomy and physiology relevant to various services.
  • Develop customer care and communication skills to deal with enquiries, retail, consultation, complaints and all forms of client care.

Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Continuous assessment of practical tasks
  • Assignments
  • Paper-based tests to assess your knowledge and understanding
  • Production of a portfolio of evidence

  • Progress to a Level 2 diploma in nail technology
