“Stopping on a school after GCSEs wasn’t for me – I wanted to be more independent,” says 17-year-old Kayla Mazunda, a business admin apprentice in the e-services department at City of Wolverhampton Council.

Kayla, who attends college one day-a-week to study for the Level 2 diploma in business, added: “Apprenticeships are great way as you learn practical skills in the workplace as well as gaining a recognised qualification at the same time.

“What I’m learning at college – such as customer service, IT and business skills – really helps in my job  and I’ve become more independent too as I have to take responsibility for getting to work on time and meeting deadlines set by my manager as well as my college tutors – an apprenticeship was definitely the right decision for me.”

After completing her apprenticeship Kayla hopes to use her knowledge and experience to gain a place at university to study for a degree in business management.
