Get into Work and Training

City of Wolverhampton College work in collaboration with Job Centre Plus, City of Wolverhampton Council and employers from across the West Midlands, to deliver work and training programmes, designed to develop your skills to get you work ready.

Our programmes aim to support you to define your future, by providing:


  • One to one, individualised career planning and support
  • Impartial careers advice and guidance
  • Support and training to enable you to get in to work and build your career in a specific sector
  • Re-training for a new career

Courses in the Community


We don’t just deliver courses in the College, we deliver courses for adult learners in community venues across Wolverhampton and Telford to support the learning and skills needs of local people. We want to ensure you can access our courses and study around your life commitments when coming into college is not always possible.


Courses are part-time and are run in the day-time. Some courses may be free which is subject to eligibility.

Careers and Skills Hub


We have a new Careers and Skills Hub located at our Wellington Road Campus. The hub is there to provide the local community with a drop in service, where you can access impartial careers advice and guidance. You will have access to one to one support, including personal career mapping and job search support to enable you to get in to work.

Sector-based Work Academy Programmes

Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPS) are courses designed to equip you with the skills required to move in to employment within a specific sector.

SWAPs typically last up to 6 weeks and contain three main components to help you get in to

work:

  • Industry specific pre-employment training
  • Work experience placement   
  • A guaranteed job interview with a real employer


Opportunities are available in a range of sectors:

  • Construction Plant Operations including Groundworks
  • Laying and Maintenance of Rail Track
  • Plastering and Skimming
  • Electric Vehicle and Green Technologies

SWAPS are open to anyone unemployed aged 19+.

Adult Social Care

Are you interested in a career in adult social care?

This course is designed to give you an introduction in to health and social care, plus the basic knowledge and skills you will need to start your career in the industry.

The course will include:

  • An introduction to adult social care
  • Meeting the care standards
  • Understanding your role, including safeguarding and risk assessment of personal care for service users
  • Relevant health and safety courses
  • Employability skills and interview prep


Skills Bootcamps

In a developing digital world, demand for digital skills has increased in the workplace and can have a huge impact in your life. City of Wolverhampton College have introduced Skills Bootcamps in digital skills, programmes designed to help build vital skills to enhance your chances of securing the job you want and thriving in a world which is becoming digital and technology dependent.

Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer.

Are you:

  • Aged 19 and over?
  • In work, self-employed, unemployed or returning to work after a break and are looking to increase your digital skills?
  • Wanting to fast-track into a new job or progress in your current job by gaining/building your digital skills?

Skills Bootcamps are part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee, helping everyone gain skills for life. Our free*, flexible Skills Bootcamps in digital skills could be the right choice for you!

Sector Gateway Courses

Sector Gateway Courses aim to help you to update your skills in specific sectors, to help you move into employment.


We offer Sector Gateway Courses in the following sectors:

  • Adult Social Care
  • Business Administration
  • Hospitality & Catering
  • Retail & Customer Service
  • Warehousing
  • Manufacturing


These courses are available to anyone interested in these sectors, or looking for a career change. All courses include developing your digital skills and applying for jobs.

Courses are available to anyone in receipt of a means tested benefit, unemployed or economically inactive.

Traineeships

A Traineeship is an education and training programme, with work experience that is focused on giving you the skills and experience that employers are looking for.


Gaining key skills in employability, qualifications in English and Maths where required and a high quality work placement in your chosen sector with a local employer.

Then a Traineeship could be right for you!

Yes to the Job

The ‘Yes to the Job’ course is for Individuals wanting to develop their personal skills for the job market, as well as improve their employability skills and how to apply for jobs.

Students will achieve an accredited qualification in Level 1 Award Employability and Personal Development Skills.

  • Presentation skills
  • Interview skills and techniques
  • Manual handling
  • Health & Safety
  • Emergency first aid
  • Essential digital skills
  • Job applications and cover letter writing

Essential Digital Skills

This short course is designed to give you the essential, every day basic digital skills and knowledge you will need.


  • Sending emails and attachments
  • Forwarding documents
  • Using the internet
  • Formatting documents in word
  • Using Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Classroom

ESOL Preparation for Work Programmes  

ESOL preparation for Work Programmes are available to anyone interested in working in specific sectors with English as a second language, or looking for a career change and will benefit from an introductory level course to gain knowledge of the industry. Programmes include developing digital skills and applying for jobs.

Preparation for Work Programmes are available in the following sectors: 


  • Adult Social Care 
  • Cleaning 
  • Hospitality & Catering
  • Retail and Customer Service 
  • Warehousing 

The course is available to anyone in receipt of a means tested benefit, unemployed or economically inactive.

ESOL

English not your first language?

If English isn’t your first language and you want to improve your skills to help you study, find work or manage in everyday life, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is the course

for you.

The course will develop and improve your English Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening skills, enabling you to become more confident in work and everyday life settings.

Our tutors will make learning fun and, as well as developing your skills, you will also learn more about life, work and traditions in the UK.

Functional Skills – Maths 

If you do not have a maths qualification the maths Functional Skills course will develop ways to help you use maths skills more effectively in a variety of situations in life, education or work.

By studying this course you will:

  • Gain confidence and develop your understanding of working with numbers
  • Learn how to interpret information for different meanings
  • Develop an appreciation for how maths relates to everyday life
  • Develop your confidence in working with numbers
  • Understand how maths skills are used at work

This is a formal qualification from Entry Level up to Level 2. A Level 2 qualification is the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4.

Functional Skills – English

If you do not have an English qualification the English Functional Skills course will develop ways to help you use English skills more effectively in a variety of situations in life, education or work.

By studying this course you will study:

  • Speaking and listening skills in a variety of situations
  • Reading techniques to help you read and understand more effectively
  • Writing techniques to enable you to write in many different situations


By studying this course you will:

  • Develop your understanding of writing techniques
  • Learn how to interpret information for different meaning
  • Develop an appreciation for reading
  • Develop your confidence in speaking by being able to deliver presentations
  • Understand how English is used in work and daily communication
  • Improve your listening skills
  • Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in group activities throughout the course


This is a formal qualification from Entry Level up to Level 2. A Level 2 qualification is the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4.
