After having two children and juggling two jobs, 37 year old Sarah Edwards decided she would like to retrain to become a nurse. She applied for an apprenticeship with the college and was offered a placement with MGS Medical Practice. She is now excelling in her apprenticeship.

Sarah said: “I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford to study a full time course, so an apprenticeship was perfect for me – I can learn on the job and get paid at the same time.

“My apprenticeship job is a duel role – I do admin and nursing. I do anything from answering the telephones and booking appointments, to seeing patients in clinics for vaccines and reviews. I also do a lot of infection control work to ensure everything is up to standard and the equipment we use is safe and in date to use.

“I have found the apprenticeship a good route for me as I find sitting in a classroom difficult. Working in a medical practice has enabled me to experience typical day-to-day tasks, and has given me a great insight into the industry. I have built up my knowledge with clinicians who have been able to mentor me 1-2-1  as well as having great support from the college. I now have a lot of experience to take forward into my future career.

“I have learnt from doing an apprenticeship that you can do anything with the right guidance and support behind you. You are never too old to start a new career or go back into education. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship.”

Sarah’s Assessor Mary Webb-Reynolds said the following about her student: “Sarah overcame many hurdles while striving to earn her qualification, but never gave up on her dream. After a little hesitation at first, Sarah grew more confident and was able to make progress towards her goal.

“The apprenticeship team are so proud of her determination and hard work, we are confident she will pass the rest of her apprenticeship with flying colours. Sarah, you’re an inspiration to us all and your success is proof that anything is possible with perseverance and support!”
