Wednesfield High Academy

A secondary school academy for 11-18-year-olds, part of the University of Wolverhampton Multi-Academy trust

Why did you decide to take on an apprentice?

It has given us the opportunity to look at the way we do things and that we can pass on our skills and teach our apprentice skills for the future in a specialised field.

What duties does the apprentice carry out?

Our apprentice provides 1:1 student support for pupils with special educational needs, supports intervention groups, takes part in small group teaching, liaises with parents and professionals, and writes reports.

How has the academy benefitted from having an apprentice?

Our apprentice has helped bring new ideas and has helped with some staff training in areas such as IT.

What support did you receive from the college when setting up the apprenticeship and what support is provided to you and your apprentice during their training?

The college is in regular contact with me and the apprentice during her time with us.

What would you say to other employers who are considering taking on an apprentice?

Taking on an apprentice it is a learning curve for both the apprentice and the employer – our apprentice is a valuable part of our team.
