Alexandr Primenciuc moved to the UK form Moldova when he was just 17 to enable him to pursue his dream of becoming a barrister– and just two years later he’s well on the way to achieving his ambition having been offered a place at the University of Birmingham to study for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

Alexandr, who is in the second year of a two-year BTec extended diploma in business, said: “I chose to do the BTec as it would give me the knowledge I needed to study law as well as the UCAS points I needed to go to university.

“The course is a good combination of theory and practical work and has allowed me to apply the skills I’ve learnt in the classroom in my assignments, as well as enabling me to gain knowledge that will be useful when I’m studying at university and in my future career – such as communicating in a professional manner, employing people, organising events and understanding how people are influenced by advertising messages.

“In addition, as my English and maths grades from school in Moldova weren’t accepted here, I was also able to do GCSEs in both subjects alongside my business course and also had the chance to get involved in extra-curricular activities – such as being a class rep, representing the college at an Association of Colleges event and doing work experience in the college’s Student Hub – all of which have given me valuable experience that will be useful in the future.

“The tutors have been a tremendous help and really supported me with my UCAS application and it feels great to have been offered a place to study law at university – it’ll be a huge step forward and a lot of work for three years but I’m very excited to be going!”
